Calcium and magnesium are two of the main constituents found in cement. A high level of calcium and magnesium plus other dissolved minerals makes your homes tap water hard and makes it hard on you. Hard water doesn’t pose a risk to your health but it can be a problem with the accumulation of minerals in the kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where water is available. You will have to use more soap and detergent as they won’t work as well in it.
As water flows through the dirt small amounts the of minerals are broken up and held in suspension. The minerals that are easily held in suspension are magnesium and calcium. The amount of minerals present in your local soil will determine how hard your water is.
One of the biggest concerns has to do with washing your clothes. Clothes laundered in hard water will start to fade a little faster and quickly lose that new clothing softness. It’s not uncommon for them to have a scratchy texture too.
Even when you wash your clothes the filth embedded in the clothes can add to the hardness of the water they’re being washed in. The fibers of the clothing will deteriorate faster and can decrease the life of these items by up to 40%.
It also presents annoyances for the water you take a bath or shower in. A scum is left on you skin as you use your favorite soap to take a shower. This residue can decrease the elimination of bacteria and dirt on your body. Normal and healthy skin has a slight acicity with is taken away by the soap curd. Hard water can cause you to have skin irritation also. When you shampoo your hair it will make it lack-lustre, lifeless, and hard to manage.
Dishwashers, hot water heaters, and washing machines are much less efficient when you are using hard water. This will translate into higher energy bills for you. Hard water that is heated will cause limestone deposits to form in your hot water heater and on your appliances. These deposits can lead to less efficiency in your appliances and sometimes can lead to the breakdown of them as well.
Even if you don’t own an appliance to soften your water you are paying for that appliance whether you have it or not. You need to use extra soap to get your clothes clean so you are paying for it. Also in the shortened life of your clothes, plumbing fixtures, and water using appliances. As well as a lot of other things we haven’t talked about yet.
Do you have any idea of what hard water is costing you each and every year? Instead why not invest your money in a good quality water softener that will last you for many years to come and rid yourself of the hard water blues for good.
